Oracle Cards Part One: Oracle vs Tarot Cards & My Collection

~ The Difference between Oracle and Tarot Cards ~ ‘The 'Moonology Oracle’, ‘The Starseed Oracle’ and ‘A Yogic Path Oracle’ Quick Reviews

Hey everyone! Welcome back to my blog/channel!

Today I’d love to talk about oracle cards! I’ve totally fallen in love with oracle cards lately, and in a relatively short time frame, I’ve collected three decks!

In today’s post/video, I’ll explain what oracle cards are, how they compare to tarot cards, and show you my (growing) collection!

First of all, let me explain the differences between tarot and oracle cards, before showing you my oracle decks and helping you figure out if oracle cards are right for you.

Oracle vs Tarot Cards

While tarot cards follow a traditional structure and generally always contain 78 cards, the structure of an oracle deck and the amount of cards it contains is completely up to the creator.

No matter what designs or themes a tarot deck might encompass, the themes and meanings behind the cards will generally always follow the traditional Ryder-Waite tarot system, including the major and minor arcana cards.

The messaging in tarot cards is essentially always the same when based on the Ryder-Waite system, no matter what the deck looks like.

In the tarot system, there are 22 Major Arcana cards and 56 Minor Arcana cards. The 56 Minor Arcana cards are organized into 4 suits - cups, pentacles, swords, and wands.

Some Tarot decks may change the names of the suits, for instance, pentacles may be called crystals instead, but the messaging can always be interpreted the same way, no matter how the images may change from deck to deck.

Oracle cards, however, often follow themes and messages that are unique to each deck, and the structure of the cards is entirely up to the creator.

They might include 80 cards or 50, they might include certain cards that are influenced by tarot, or they might be a series of different animals, plants, gods or goddesses, fairies, angels, you name it.

There’s honestly an oracle deck for any interests you might have!

Just like tarot cards, some oracle decks will be harder to interpret than others.

It depends on how detailed or simple the artwork may be, and whether they include text or numerology that can be helpful.

So if you’re struggling to connect with Tarot, you may find an Oracle deck that resonates with you more.

As I show you my collection today, you might be drawn to one or all of the decks, or like the idea but are perhaps overwhelmed. Hopefully, the information and resources in this blog post will help! You’ll find links below to all the cards I own, videos I’ve found helpful, plus some suggestions for other popular decks that you might enjoy.

Both Oracle and tarot cards, and even reading tea leaves as I tried in last week’s post, require you to look at the images, symbology, and stories presented, and use both your intuition and imagination to seek guidance or find an answer to your question.

Guidebooks are helpful when learning any cards or form of divination as they help you form ideas and understand what certain symbols or images might mean.

As far as I know, all Tarot and Oracle decks include a small guidebook to help you understand what the creator intended each card to mean.

But ultimately, your interpretation is always going to be unique to you. What you do with the information you gather from any sort of reading is up to you, too.

That being said, let’s get into what decks I have! Then in next week’s post, I’ll share part two on oracle cards - showing how all three different decks can be used in one reading, and with tarot. So if you’re left with any questions today, be sure to leave them in a comment below or contact me. I’d love to connect with you and talk about oracle cards and tarot - if you haven’t already noticed, I’m slightly obsessed!

My Oracle Collection

To see more of my oracle decks and what I love about them, watch the video above! The following is simply a brief summary - and honestly, no amount of words, photos, or video can do these card decks justice. They are all so beautiful, and so lovely to use!

But just to give you a quick overview, these are the three oracle decks I own currently. I have no doubt I’ll collect far more in the future! Let me know if you own any oracle cards below, and whether you’d recommend them - not that I need further encouragement!

Links for the following cards, plus a few other different suggestions (that are on my wishlist!) are at the end of this post, along with a few other YouTube videos I recommend.

‘Moonology Oracle Cards’

By Yasmin Boland, Artwork by Nyx Rowan

  • I love that these cards teach me about the phases of the moon! Drawing cards from the Moonology deck is so much fun, while also learning about astrology. Yasmin Boland is an award-winning astrologer, so these cards and the included guidebook are a lovely introduction to a fascinating topic.

  • While I don’t yet know enough about astrology to be able to interpret the images on the cards, the text on the cards is clear and helpful.

  • The artwork is beautiful, and the cards themselves are of wonderful quality!

  • Moonology Oracle Cards can be purchased on Amazon, but as always I encourage you to look locally first (see more links below).

‘The Starseed Oracle’

By Rebecca Campbell, Artwork by Danielle Noel

  • Deep dive into the cosmos and see what you may learn! The ‘Starseed Soul’ concept behind these cards is so beautiful. The meaning behind each and every card in the deck is insightful, asking the reader to look inwards, to “unlock your soul gifts, connect with your cosmic origins, and remember who you truly are.”

  • The artwork is a beautiful collage of images and illustrations, with helpful text below to help guide you. The included guidebook is really helpful too!

  • The Starseed Oracle Cards can be purchased on Amazon, but as always I encourage you to look locally first (see more links below).

‘A Yogic Path Oracle Cards’

By Sahara Rose, Artwork by Danielle Noel

  • I’m obsessed with these cards if you can’t tell from my enthusiasm in the video! Not only are they stunning visually - from the artwork to the attention to detail and the full-colour guidebook, they are also a wonderful way to learn about Vedic spirituality. As the guidebook reads, “Steeped in the wisdom of the Vegas, this ancient yet visionary deck is a tool to access your yogic intuition.”

  • A Yogic Path oracle cards are such an amazing way to learn, and to seek guidance and insight, while also simply appreciating the beautiful, richly coloured artwork, also by Danielle Noel.

  • A Yogic Path Oracle Cards can be purchased on Amazon, but as always I encourage you to look locally first (see more links below).
